Globus Spirits share price could remain in focus after the Supreme Court raised concerns over the sale of alcohol in tetra packs, sachets, and other inconspicuous packaging formats that allegedly resemble fruit juice products.

Hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Community Against Drunken Driving, the Supreme Court termed alcohol sold in tetra packs and sachets as “very deceptive” and issued notices to the Centre, state excise departments, Globus Spirits, and Wave Distilleries and Breweries.

The matter is scheduled for further hearing on August 10.

Supreme Court Raises Concern Over Packaging Style

The PIL alleged that certain liquor products were being sold in portable PET bottles, plastic sachets, and tetra-pack formats with colourful branding and fruit-themed labels that closely resemble packaged fruit juices.

As per news reports, products cited in the petition included labels such as “Bunty Premium Vodka,” “Chelli Mango Vodka,” and “Premium Romanov Vodka – Apple Thrill.”

According to the petitioners, such packaging could potentially appeal to underage consumers and make alcohol easier to conceal, transport, and consume publicly.

The court also took note of submissions claiming that many such products lacked clear and visible health warnings. During the hearing, the petitioner’s counsel argued that unlike tobacco products, alcohol packaging often carries only fine-print warnings that are difficult for consumers to notice.

PIL Seeks Ban On Alcohol In Tetra Packs And Sachets

The petition sought stricter regulations on alcohol packaging and urged the court to direct authorities to restrict liquor sales to visibly distinguishable containers such as glass bottles.

It also requested a uniform definition of “bottling” to prevent state authorities from approving less conspicuous packaging formats under broad regulatory interpretations.

The PIL argued that such packaging styles may encourage underage drinking, increase public consumption, and potentially facilitate interstate smuggling.

Conclusion

The Supreme Court’s observations have brought renewed attention to packaging practices in India’s liquor industry. While the court has not passed any final order yet, the case could have regulatory implications for alcohol manufacturers using portable and fruit-themed packaging formats. Investors may keep liquor stocks, including Globus Spirits, on their radar as the matter progresses in court proceedings.
