Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has taken a key step in India’s rail modernisation programme by commencing the supply of semi-high-speed underslung traction transformers for the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train project.
The development reinforces the company’s growing role in indigenous rail propulsion systems under the Make in India initiative.
The first set of traction transformers was flagged off from BHEL’s Jhansi plant for the Vande Bharat Sleeper project being executed by a BHEL-led consortium with TRSL.
These transformers are designed for operational speeds of up to 160 kmph with a design capability of 180 kmph and will be dispatched to Kolkata for final train assembly. Earlier, traction converters for the same project were supplied from BHEL’s Bengaluru unit.
Alongside traction transformers, BHEL has developed and manufactured traction motors at its Bhopal facility, further expanding its footprint across critical propulsion equipment.
The Jhansi plant has also secured an order for Rail Borne Maintenance Vehicles (RBMVs), marking its entry into specialised railway track maintenance systems aimed at improving safety, precision and asset life.
The RBMV project and the Vande Bharat Sleeper supplies align with government initiatives such as Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat, with complete domestic manufacturing planned at BHEL facilities.
These developments position BHEL as a key supplier of advanced rail technologies as India scales up high-speed and semi-high-speed rail infrastructure.
