Ambuja Cements, part of the Adani Group, has taken a major step towards cutting cement emissions. In collaboration with Swden-based Eco Tech, it will lead the first carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) pre-pilot study in the global cement industry. In simple words, the project aims to explore how carbon dioxide from cement production can be captured and converted into useful green materials and fuels.
Ambuja Cements has become the first cement company worldwide to receive an Indo-Swedish grant for a CCU feasibility project. The study is supported by India’s Department of Science and Technology and the Swedish Energy Agency.
The initiative marks an important shift from traditional carbon storage methods to a circular carbon economy, where captured CO₂ is reused rather than stored.
The company is partnering with IIT Bombay’s National Centre of Excellence in Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage to test advanced technologies for CO₂ capture and mineralisation. These technologies aim to create scalable and cost-effective solutions for high-emission sectors like cement.
Sweden’s Eco Tech will support the project by helping optimise energy use, recover waste heat, and integrate renewable power into the process. Together, the partners aim to create a model that can later be expanded across the industry.
The feasibility study will examine whether CO₂ emitted from cement operations can be converted into valuable products.
Potential outcomes include producing calcium carbonate, which is used in several industries, and creating green methanol using green hydrogen. These solutions could help lower emissions while supporting new green manufacturing pathways.
The initiative also strengthens Ambuja’s broader plan to achieve its net-zero targets. The company is already increasing renewable energy use and expanding its share of alternative fuels and raw materials. CCU is expected to form the final stage in its long-term decarbonisation strategy.
If successful, the project could become a blueprint for other cement producers globally. The cement sector is considered one of the hardest to decarbonise due to the large amount of CO₂ released during production. A workable CCU model could therefore accelerate progress toward cleaner industrial operations.
Ambuja Cements’ new Indo-Swedish CCU pilot marks an important move towards greener cement manufacturing. By exploring technologies that convert emissions into useful products, the company aims to support both sustainability goals and future industrial innovation. The outcome of the study will be closely watched by the global cement industry and investors alike.
