Adani Power has increased electricity exports to Bangladesh, according to data from both governments, even as relations between the 2 countries have deteriorated, as per Reuters reports.
India and Bangladesh have suspended visa services and summoned diplomats over security concerns at their missions, but electricity trade has continued.
Electricity exports from Adani’s Godda coal-fired plant in Jharkhand rose nearly 38% year-on-year to about 2.25 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) in the three months to December.
Indian power accounted for 15.6% of Bangladesh’s electricity mix in 2025, up from 12% in 2024. Adani began supplying electricity to Bangladesh in early 2023.
Bangladesh is facing gas shortages due to falling domestic production and limits in transmission infrastructure that have restricted the use of liquefied natural gas.
Gas-fired generation accounted for 42.6% of the country’s power mix last year, down from nearly two-thirds over the previous decade. The Bangladesh Power Development Board expects electricity demand to rise by 6% to 7% in 2026.
To manage gas shortages, Bangladesh plans to increase coal imports and domestic coal-based power generation. Coal imports rose 35% to a record 17.34 million metric tonnes in 2025, according to Kpler data.
The government has indicated that coal-based generation will be expanded to stabilise supply.
Adani supplied 8.63 billion kWh of electricity to Bangladesh in 2025, accounting for 8.2% of total supply, according to Bangladesh power grid data.
Imports from other Indian companies were marginal. During the first 27 days of January, Adani accounted for about 10% of electricity supplied in the country.

Electricity imports from India have increased as Bangladesh faces gas shortages and rising demand, with Adani Power contributing a larger share of supply despite ongoing diplomatic tensions.
