OpenAI has named Raghav Gupta, former Asia Pacific Managing Director at Coursera, as the head of its education vertical for India and the Asia Pacific region. His appointment was announced in New Delhi by Leah Belsky, OpenAI’s Vice President and General Manager for Education. Gupta will drive the company’s initiatives in education as OpenAI expands its presence in one of its fastest-growing markets.
The company recently confirmed plans to establish its first office in India this year, highlighting its focus on the country. Currently, OpenAI has 2 employees in India - Pragya Misra, who manages public policy and partnerships, and now Gupta. It also works with senior advisor Rishi Jaitly, former Twitter India head, to facilitate government engagement on AI policy. Alongside this, OpenAI is collaborating with ed-tech firms in both India and the US to build education products powered by ChatGPT APIs.
For the education sector, OpenAI is introducing India-specific programmes, including a learning accelerator in partnership with IIT Madras, AICTE, and the Ministry of Education. As part of this initiative, it announced a $500,000 grant to IIT Madras for long-term research on how AI can improve classroom learning and cognitive outcomes.
The company is also hiring for multiple sales roles in India to expand its operations. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who is set to visit India next month, emphasised the company’s vision, stating: "Incredibly fast-growing" India can surpass the US to become OpenAI's largest market.
He added, "We are especially focused on bringing products to India, working with local partners to make AI work great for India, (making) it more affordable for people across the country. We've been paying a lot of attention here, given the rate of growth."
