The Telecom Security Testing Lab (TSTL) at IIT-Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation has become the first in India to receive approval from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) for testing 5G core-network functions. Reportedly, the approval covers Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF) and 5G Group-I devices.

Certification Scope

The clearance was issued by the National Centre for Communication Security (NCCS). The certification allows the lab to conduct testing for 21 key core-network functions under a common set of security requirements. The authorisation enables the lab to evaluate 5G equipment and devices used in network deployment.

Security Framework

The NCCS is responsible for implementing the Communication Security Certification Scheme (ComSec), which operates under the Mandatory Testing and Certification of Telecom Equipment (MTCTE) rules. This framework sets out processes for testing and certifying telecom and ICT products in India to ensure compliance with security standards.

Institutional Role

IIT-Madras Director V. Kamakoti said the certification will help India reduce reliance on overseas testing facilities. The approval positions the institute to support research and development in telecom security and contribute to building equipment that meets national requirements.

About Pravartak Technologies

Pravartak Technologies Foundation is registered as a Section 8 company and operates a technology innovation hub focused on sensors, networking, actuators, and control systems. Its telecom security lab now stands as the first facility in India authorised to validate 5G network core functions through independent testing.

Industry Perspective

  1. Shankar Raman, CEO of Pravartak Technologies Foundation, noted that the certification confirms the lab’s role in assessing telecom equipment against Indian security standards. He said the authorisation is an acknowledgement of India’s capability in developing secure telecom infrastructure.
