Zomato co-founder Deepinder Goyal has thrown his support behind an ambitious new aerospace venture LAT Aerospace which is aiming to build India’s first indigenously designed and developed gas turbine engines.

Based in Bengaluru, the startup has set up a dedicated propulsion research unit with the goal of delivering flight-ready engines for regional aircraft and drones.

LAT Prioritises Agility and Innovation

LAT Aerospace is building its propulsion systems entirely from scratch without relying on off the shelf parts or legacy technologies. The company describes its method as a “clean-sheet” engineering strategy, which grants full autonomy to its team of engineers for design, prototyping, and testing, as per news reports.

The team will operate independently of traditional corporate processes, prioritising speed and experimentation over extended approval chains.

End-to-End R&D Facility in Bengaluru

LAT’s upcoming R&D facility will include labs focused on combustion systems, turbomachinery, materials, and thermal engineering enabling comprehensive, in-house capability under one roof.

This structure aims to address key limitations that have historically hindered gas turbine development in India, such as long feedback loops and limited iteration cycles.

India’s previous attempt at building indigenous engines HAL’s Kaveri project struggled with thrust limitations and delays. LAT Aerospace is consciously differentiating itself by adopting a startup-style development model.

Funding and Leadership

The company has raised $50 million in seed funding, with Goyal contributing around $20 million personally. While Eternal’s Goyal serves as a non-executive co-founder, day to day operations are being led by Surobhi Das, former COO of Zomato.

The startup is actively hiring engineers specialising in propulsion systems, turbines, and control mechanisms, with the core team already operating from Bengaluru.

Conclusion

LAT Aerospace marks a bold step in India’s aerospace journey, combining startup agility with deep engineering focus. With dedicated funding, an empowered team, and a clearly defined mission, the company is positioning itself at the intersection of advanced propulsion technology and regional aviation solutions.
