As per news reports, the Maharashtra government has identified about 2.6 million beneficiaries under the Ladki Bahin scheme who do not appear to meet eligibility norms. Women and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare said the list was prepared using preliminary data from the Information and Technology Department and has been sent to districts for checks.
As per news reports, Tatkare confirmed that officials across all districts have been tasked with physical verification of the flagged names. The scrutiny will determine whether these individuals qualify under the scheme. The minister added that benefits for eligible women would continue during the process, and only those confirmed as ineligible would face action.
According to Tatkare, once the district-level checks are complete, the eligibility status of each case will be clarified. Those found ineligible will be removed from the beneficiary list, while genuine cases wrongly flagged will be reinstated. The minister highlighted that in some instances, women had provided the bank account details of male family members, which created discrepancies.
The Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin scheme provides financial support of ₹1,500 per month to women aged 21 to 65 years. Beneficiaries must have an annual income of less than ₹2.5 lakh and cannot be enrolled in other government welfare schemes. As of now, around 22.5 million women in the state have been marked as eligible.
As per the reports, earlier reviews had revealed irregularities such as multiple beneficiaries being listed from the same family, and in some cases, even male applicants being registered. The ministry said that such issues underlined the importance of physical verification to prevent misuse and ensure that only eligible women continue to receive aid.
