Indian Railways will discontinue its Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) mobile app from March 1, 2026, shifting all services to the newly launched RailOne app. While passengers can continue booking unreserved and platform tickets through RailOne, the biggest concern for many users is clear: what happens to the money in the R-Wallet?

Here’s what you need to know.

R-Wallet Balance Will Be Transferred, But With a Condition

The Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) has clarified that the balance in your UTS R-Wallet will automatically be transferred to the RailOne app. However, there is one critical requirement: you must register on RailOne using the same mobile number that was linked to your UTS account.

If you use a different number, you will not be able to access your existing R-Wallet balance. The wallet amount is non-transferable between mobile numbers.

Can You Change Your Mobile Number and Still Use the Money?

No. According to Indian Railways guidelines, R-Wallet balances cannot be transferred to another number. If you have changed your mobile number, you have only two options:

  1. Use up the balance by booking tickets before discontinuation, or
  2. Surrender the R-Wallet and claim a refund

How to Get a Refund of R-Wallet Money

If you choose to surrender the wallet:

  1. Go to the “Profile” section in the UTS app
  2. Select “Surrender Wallet”
  3. A verification code will be sent to your registered mobile number
  4. Visit any UTS counter with the code and registered mobile number

The remaining balance will be refunded after deducting a ₹30 clerkage charge.

Conclusion

Passengers will not lose their R-Wallet money due to the UTS shutdown, but accessing it depends entirely on using the same registered mobile number in RailOne. Those who cannot do so must either exhaust the balance or formally surrender the wallet for a refund.

With the March 1 deadline approaching, users are advised to act promptly to avoid inconvenience.
