The Government of India has launched the e-OCI (Electronic Overseas Citizen of India) Card, enabling Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders to carry a digital version of their OCI credentials on their smartphones. The initiative was unveiled by Union Home Minister Amit Shah as part of the government's broader push to digitise citizen services.
With more than 50 lakh OCI cardholders worldwide, the move is expected to simplify international travel by reducing dependence on the physical OCI booklet while making identity verification faster at immigration checkpoints and by airlines.
The e-OCI card digitises the entire OCI process—from application and document submission to card issuance and download. Existing OCI cardholders can now access and store their digital card on a mobile device without applying for a new physical booklet.
One of the biggest changes is the removal of the requirement to reissue the OCI booklet every time a cardholder renews their passport after the age of 20. Instead, cardholders only need to update their passport details through the online portal, making the process significantly simpler.
The government has clarified that existing physical OCI booklets will continue to remain valid, and cardholders are not required to surrender them.
Existing OCI cardholders can download the digital card through the OCI Services Portal by logging in with their registered credentials. After signing in, users can access the e-OCI section on the dashboard, generate the digital card, and download it for future use.
Those who have not yet registered on the portal can complete the registration using the email address provided during their original OCI application.
The digital card can then be presented at immigration checkpoints and to airlines wherever required.
Alongside the e-OCI card, the government also introduced the FCRA 2.0 Portal, a fully digital compliance platform for organisations registered under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA).
The upgraded portal integrates Aadhaar-based authentication, e-Sign, OCR-enabled document verification, and links with databases such as PAN, Aadhaar, OCI, and NGO Darpan. The platform is expected to benefit around 14,500 FCRA-registered organisations, with additional features such as a mobile application, AI-powered chatbot, and banking dashboard planned for future rollout.
The launch of the e-OCI card marks a significant step in India's digital governance efforts. By allowing OCI holders to carry their credentials digitally and simplifying passport-related updates, the government aims to make international travel more convenient while reducing paperwork. Together with the launch of the FCRA 2.0 Portal, the initiative reflects a broader push towards technology-driven public services and streamlined administrative processes.
