EPFO Upgraded Member Portal Goes Live: UAN Activation and Generation Shift to UMANG App

The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has rolled out its upgraded Unified Member Portal after a nearly week-long scheduled maintenance, introducing a revamped interface and several changes aimed at improving user experience. The updated portal promises faster, more secure and reliable services, but it also changes how members access some of the most frequently used EPFO services.
Among the biggest updates is the migration of UAN activation and new UAN generation from the EPFO portal to the government's UMANG app, where members must complete Aadhaar-based Face Authentication (FAT).
UAN Activation and Generation Now Available Only on UMANG
One of the most significant changes is that members can no longer activate their Universal Account Number (UAN) or generate a new UAN through the EPFO Unified Member Portal.
Instead, these services are now available exclusively on the UMANG (Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance) app.
To activate an existing UAN, users need to open the UMANG app, navigate to EPFO Services, and select "UAN Activation" under "UAN Services Through Face Auth."
Similarly, individuals who need a new UAN must choose "UAN Allotment and Activation" in the same section and complete the Aadhaar-based Face Authentication process.
Existing Services Continue With Some Improvements
The upgraded portal also simplifies the process of retrieving a forgotten UAN. Members can recover their UAN by entering their registered mobile number, uploading a valid identity or address proof, and verifying the OTP sent to their mobile number.
Meanwhile, existing Provident Fund members who have not yet been allotted a UAN can still obtain one by verifying their registered mobile number, providing the required member details and linking the newly generated UAN to their PF account.
The death claim facility, including pension-related claims, continues to remain available on the Unified Member Portal.
Important Points for Death Claims
EPFO has advised beneficiaries to ensure that their Aadhaar-linked mobile number is active before filing a death claim.
Applicants should also keep the following documents ready:
- Death certificate of the EPF member
- Bank account proof, such as a cancelled cheque or passbook
- Date of birth proof of the beneficiary, where applicable
The organisation has also clarified that only PDF files up to 2 MB can be uploaded, and filenames should not contain spaces.
Conclusion
The upgraded EPFO Unified Member Portal marks another step in the organisation's digital transformation. By shifting UAN activation and generation to the UMANG app with Aadhaar-based Face Authentication, EPFO aims to enhance security while streamlining member services. Existing users should familiarise themselves with the new process to avoid delays when accessing important EPF services.
