EPFO Cuts Pending Litigation to Record Low After Special Resolution Drives

Employees Provident Fund Organisation reduced its pending litigation count to the lowest level in its history after conducting targeted drives to accelerate dispute resolution across multiple legal forums.
Pending Cases Decline Across Legal Forums
The retirement fund body launched mission-mode initiatives aimed at speeding up disposal of cases pending before consumer courts and industrial tribunals.
As part of the exercise, EPFO used its Nidhi Aapke Nikat outreach programme to identify unresolved consumer matters in advance and fast-track their settlement process.
The organisation also expanded grievance redressal efforts under the programme to help reduce case backlogs and improve resolution timelines for members.
According to EPFO data, total pending litigation declined to 27,639 cases as of April 1, 2026, compared with 31,036 cases a year earlier, reflecting a reduction of 3,397 cases.
Sharp Fall Recorded in Decade-Old Cases
The organisation also reported a significant decline in long-pending disputes. The cases pending for more than 10 years dropped from 8,539 to 4,665 during the period, marking a reduction of 3,874 cases, or around 45.4. The latest figures represent the lowest litigation pendency level recorded by EPFO so far.
Special Tribunal Drive Conducted Across India
Separately, EPFO conducted a nationwide campaign during February and March 2026 to clear matters pending before the Central Government Industrial Tribunals.
The campaign focused on disputes linked to interest payable by employers for delayed provident fund remittances under the Employees’ Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952.
To improve coordination during the drive, the organisation appointed zone-wise nodal officers to work with tribunals and stakeholders.
More Cases Still Targeted for Disposal
EPFO said the campaign helped dispose of 353 appeals during the period. The organisation added that efforts are continuing for faster resolution of another 650 pending cases across tribunals.
