Only 4 International Mutual Funds Open for Fresh Investments: Here are the Options

Indian investors seeking international diversification currently have limited mutual fund options, with only 4 overseas-focused schemes open for fresh investments.
Baroda BNP Paribas Aqua FoF resumed fresh investments from August 3, 2026, while three schemes from HSBC Mutual Fund reopened for subscriptions on August 18, 2026, according to Moneycontrol. The reopening comes as several overseas markets have delivered strong gains, while Indian equities have remained under pressure.
International Mutual Funds Open for Fresh Investments
The 4 schemes currently accepting fresh investments are Baroda BNP Paribas Aqua FoF, HSBC Asia Pacific (Ex Japan) Dividend Yield Fund, HSBC Brazil Fund and HSBC Global Emerging Markets Fund.
Investors can make fresh or additional lump-sum investments in the three HSBC schemes, along with SIPs, STPs, switch-ins, and IDCW Transfer Plans. However, investments across these routes are capped at ₹2 lakh per PAN per month.
HSBC Mutual Fund suspended fresh subscriptions in these schemes in December 2025.
International Mutual Fund Returns in 2026
The 4 schemes have delivered positive returns so far in 2026, although their performance varies based on their underlying markets and investment themes.
Mutual Fund Scheme | YTD Return | 1-Year Return |
31.70% | 53.12% | |
24.90% | 40.07% | |
13.40% | 14.06% | |
10.16% | 28.32% | |
-7.33% | -3.47% |
The funds provide exposure to different geographies and themes, so their returns are not directly comparable with the Nifty 50 or with each other.
South Korea, Taiwan and Japan Lead Global Markets
Global market performance has also varied significantly. South Korea's KOSPI has gained 62.73% so far in 2026, while Taiwan's benchmark has risen 54.87%. Japan's Nikkei 225 has advanced 31.56%.
In contrast, Indonesia's IDX Composite has declined nearly 25% during the year, while India and Vietnam have also remained in negative territory.
The differences highlight the importance of looking at the specific geography and investment theme before assessing an international fund.
Why are Most International Funds Closed to Fresh Investments?
The limited availability of international mutual funds is largely linked to overseas investment limits for Indian mutual funds.
The mutual fund industry has an overall limit of $7 billion for investments in overseas securities, while investments in overseas exchange-traded funds are subject to a separate industry-wide limit.
As fund houses approached these limits, several international schemes suspended fresh subscriptions. This has left investors with fewer options for geographical diversification despite continued interest in overseas markets.
Conclusion
Only 4 international mutual fund schemes are currently accepting fresh investments, providing Indian investors with exposure to emerging markets, Asia-Pacific, Brazil and the global water theme. Their recent positive returns differ significantly from the Nifty 50, but the schemes carry different geographical, currency, and market risks.
