Uber has expanded its mobility offerings in India by introducing intercity bus ticket booking through a partnership with ixigo’s bus platform AbhiBus. The initiative marks the first time Uber is launching such a service globally.
Through the partnership, Uber users will be able to search and book intercity bus tickets directly from the Uber app.
AbhiBus will power the service with its end-to-end booking technology and operator integrations, enabling users to explore bus options, compare services, check real-time seat availability and select preferred seats.
Passengers will also be able to filter buses by categories such as AC, Sleeper, Seater, Volvo and Scania, view 360° bus photos on select routes, track live bus status, access 24×7 customer support, and opt for Abhi Assured, which offers compensation benefits in case of service disruptions.
Rohit Sharma, COO of AbhiBus, said the integration will allow Uber users to access more than 6 lakh bus routes, making bus travel discovery within the app as convenient as booking a cab.
The move represents a shift in Uber’s traditional operating model. Instead of building its own bus network, the company has opted for a partnership-led strategy, leveraging AbhiBus’ operator network to access routes across India while maintaining an asset-light approach.
India is the first market where Uber is introducing intercity bus ticketing as the company seeks to tap into the country’s expanding mobility market, which it estimates could reach $13 billion by 2030.
Bus travel alone accounts for roughly $6 billion to $8 billion of that opportunity, with the rest coming from intra-city and intercity cab services.
The launch also comes as Uber works to strengthen its presence in India amid rising competition in the ride-hailing sector. The company recently infused ₹3,000 crore into Uber India Systems to improve its cash reserves.
In FY25, Uber India reported a net loss of ₹1,511 crore, nearly 15× higher than the ₹89 crore loss recorded in the previous fiscal year, while gross revenue remained largely flat at ₹2,604 crore, including commissions earned from rides.
AbhiBus, which was acquired by ixigo in 2021 through a cash-and-stock transaction, aggregates inventory from over 6,200 bus operators covering more than 6.5 lakh routes across India.
According to ixigo cofounder and CEO Aloke Bajpai, the bus business has grown significantly since the acquisition, expanding annual GTV from about ₹400–₹500 crore to over ₹2,400 crore in the last 12 months, reflecting nearly 6× growth and continuing to grow at 40%–50% year-on-year.

Uber’s partnership with AbhiBus expands its services beyond ride-hailing while enabling access to India’s large intercity bus market, as both companies look to capitalise on the country’s growing digital mobility ecosystem.
