The trading holiday applies to both the BSE and NSE, with no transactions taking place across equity, derivatives, or currency segments.
In addition to stock exchanges, banks in several Indian states will also observe a public holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act, leading to a pause in physical banking operations for the day.
Let’s take a look at how this holiday will shape trading schedules and banking operations across the country.
On the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), trading will be suspended during the morning session (9:00 AM to 5:00 PM) on November 5. However, evening trading will operate as usual from 5:00 PM to 11:30 PM /11:55 PM.
Banks across several Indian states will also remain closed on November 5 in observance of Prakash Gurpurb Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Kartik Purnima, and Rahas Purnima.
States observing the holiday include Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Chandigarh, Uttarakhand, Telangana, Arunachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Nagaland, West Bengal, Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Himachal Pradesh.
While most major financial centers such as Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Hyderabad will observe the closure, banking services in certain regions including Chennai, Kochi, Gangtok, Guwahati, and Vijayawada will continue as usual.
This regional variation reflects state specific recognition of festivals and public holidays.
Also known as Gurpurab or Prakash Parv, Guru Nanak Jayanti marks the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Guru and founder of Sikhism.
