On March 19, 2026, the rupee market is closed in observance of Gudi Padwa, a significant regional festival marking the Hindu New Year in Maharashtra and other states.

While the equity markets continue to operate as usual, the currency derivatives segment, including rupee forex trading, is not available for the day.

Gudi Padwa and Its Impact on Financial Markets

Gudi Padwa is celebrated with much enthusiasm in Maharashtra and some other regions, leading to the closure of specific financial segments.

On this day, the currency derivatives trading on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) is suspended. This affects the rupee forex market, which remains inactive throughout the day.

Despite the closure of the rupee market, the equity markets maintain their regular trading hours, from 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM.

This ensures that investors can continue to trade in stocks and futures & options (F&O) without disruption.

Banking Operations in Maharashtra

In addition to the rupee market, banks in Maharashtra are closed for Gudi Padwa. This affects various banking services, including cheque clearing, which may experience delays due to the holiday. Customers are advised to plan their banking activities accordingly.

Commodity Markets Remain Operational

Unlike the rupee market, commodity trading on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) operates normally on March 19, 2026. This is in contrast to full equity holidays like Holi, where both equity and commodity markets may be closed.

Conclusion

The closure of the rupee market on Gudi Padwa highlights the impact of regional holidays on specific financial segments. While currency derivatives trading is paused, equity and commodity markets continue their operations, ensuring that investors have access to other trading opportunities.
