India’s telecom sector recorded steady growth in September 2025, driven by a strong performance from Reliance Jio and consistent gains by Bharti Airtel, according to the latest TRAI data. The industry added a total of 34.1 lakh new mobile subscribers, reflecting the continued rise in digital connectivity across the country.
Reliance Jio remained India’s top telecom operator, adding 32.5 lakh new subscribers in September. This was a sharp increase from 19.5 lakh additions in August. This strong growth highlights Jio’s expanding market dominance, supported by affordable data plans, wide network coverage, and increasing customer trust.
With these additions, Reliance Jio continues to strengthen its leadership position in India’s telecom industry, playing a key role in boosting the country’s mobile and digital ecosystem.
Bharti Airtel sustained its steady performance, adding 4.37 lakh new users during the same period. Though slightly lower than 4.96 lakh additions in August, Airtel’s consistent growth showcases its reliable network quality and customer retention strategy. The company continues to be the second-largest telecom operator in India, competing closely with Jio in urban and rural markets alike.
In contrast, Vodafone Idea saw its subscriber base shrink further, losing 7.44 lakh users in September compared to 3.1 lakh losses in August. The ongoing decline highlights the operator’s struggle to retain customers amid intense competition from Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel.
Despite the mixed performances of telecom companies, the overall telecom subscriber growth signals India’s rising digital adoption. Factors such as affordable smartphones, low-cost data plans, and increasing dependence on internet services are driving this trend.
