India’s defence manufacturing programme is expected to reach a key milestone later this year, as the Tata-Airbus joint venture prepares to hand over its first domestically assembled C295 military transport aircraft from its Vadodara facility, as per PTI report.
The C295 aircraft will be delivered from the Tata-Airbus assembly line in Vadodara to the Ministry of Defence, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to mark the occasion in the 2nd half of the year.
This aircraft represents the first production output from the Indian assembly line established by Tata Advanced Systems Limited in partnership with Airbus.
Local sourcing accounts for 70% of the components used in the aircraft, while the remaining 30% are imported, including the engine supplied by Connecticut-headquartered Pratt & Whitney.
The Vadodara facility plays a central role in fulfilling the Indian Air Force’s order for 56 C295 aircraft. Of this total, 16 aircraft have already been supplied from Airbus’ manufacturing site in Spain.
The remaining 40 aircraft are scheduled to be produced and delivered from India. Airbus President International and Executive Committee Member Wouter Van Wersch described the transition to domestic production as a significant step, stating, “That's a big step. All the others will be coming from the India assembly line.”
Beyond the current defence contract, the Vadodara unit is expected to support future deliveries to regional markets. Airbus has steadily expanded its presence in India across engineering, digital operations and workforce training.
Van Wersch said India has become one of Airbus’ key global centres for engineering and digital capabilities, adding that the company is relocating its Bengaluru operations to a larger campus while continuing training activities across India, including at its Delhi office.

With 40 aircraft slated for delivery from Vadodara under the C295 programme, the Tata-Airbus partnership strengthens India’s role in military aircraft manufacturing while reinforcing the country’s position within Airbus’ global industrial network.
