In a historic change in India’s car market, Mahindra & Mahindra has overtaken Hyundai India to become the country’s second-largest carmaker, ending Hyundai’s 25-year hold on that position.

M&M share price was trading at ₹3,387.40 at 12:25 PM.

How Many Cars Has Mahindra & Mahindra Sold?

From January to July 2025, Mahindra sold 351,065 vehicles, surpassing Hyundai’s sales numbers by over 21,000. This is a significant turnaround compared to the same period last year, when Hyundai led with 358,785 units sold, while Mahindra sold 291,971.

Mahindra’s sales grew by 20.2% this year, while Hyundai’s dropped by 8.1%. With exciting new models lined up, Mahindra’s lead is expected to grow.

What’s Driving Mahindra’s Success?

Mahindra’s rise is credited to the growing popularity of its ICE models like XUV 3XO, Thar and Thar Roxx, and Scorpio and Scorpio-N. At the same time, Mahindra is gaining traction with its new electric vehicles (EVs), such as BE 6 and XEV 9e. The combination of strong ICE and EV offerings is attracting more buyers towards the company.

What is Behind Hyundai’s Slowdown in Sales?

While Hyundai’s popular Creta model sales rose by 20%, the rest of its lineup, including models like i10 Nios, i20, Aura, Venue, Verna, and others, fell by 10% overall. This is attributed to product fatigue among consumers and heavy reliance on the Creta.

Hyundai plans to boost sales with the launch of a new Venue model in October 2025, but catching up to Mahindra this year looks unlikely.

Monthly Sales Highlights

Mahindra outperformed Hyundai in 5 months of 2025 so far. This includes February, April, May, June, and July. Despite a slight decline in sales, Maruti Suzuki remains India’s top carmaker, while Tata Motors holds the fourth position.

Conclusion

Hyundai had held the No. 2 spot since 2000, after entering India in 1998-99 and overtaking Tata Motors. Now, Mahindra’s rise signals a major shift in the market. With a strong product lineup in both ICE and electric vehicles, Mahindra is well placed to lead India’s car industry growth in the coming years.
