
India’s defence innovation ecosystem is gaining momentum, with 58 prototypes worth ₹3,853 crore receiving procurement clearance under the Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) initiative, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Thursday.
Speaking at the National Defence Industries Conclave 2026 in New Delhi, Singh highlighted the expanding role of startups and MSMEs in strengthening indigenous defence capabilities, particularly in emerging technologies such as drones, artificial intelligence, and advanced manufacturing.
Since its launch in 2018, the iDEX framework has steadily evolved into a key platform for defence innovation in India. Around 676 startups and innovators are now part of the ecosystem.

These figures indicate a shift towards design-led manufacturing, with startups increasingly contributing to solutions tailored for the Armed Forces, Indian Coast Guard, and Defence Space Agency.
At the conclave, the Defence Minister launched the 14th edition of the Defence India Start-up Challenge (DISC-14) along with the fourth edition of ADITI challenges under the iDEX framework.
A total of 107 problem statements were unveiled, aimed at encouraging startups and MSMEs to develop solutions across critical defence areas.
In addition, 101 innovation challenges funded by Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) were introduced, offering support in mentorship, testing, and integration into defence supply chains.

The latest data from the iDEX initiative signals a steady build-up of India’s defence innovation capabilities, with increasing participation from startups and MSMEs and a growing pipeline of deployable solutions.
