In a significant development for India’s defence sector, the government has cleared the ambitious Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme. Positioned as a critical component of the Indian Air Force's future fleet, the AMCA will be India’s first indigenously developed fifth-generation stealth fighter jet. The project gains urgency amid increasing military cooperation between China and Pakistan.

Indigenous Defence Milestone: Made in India 5th-Generation Fighter Jet

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved the execution model for the AMCA project. This marks a major milestone in India's goal of building an indigenous 5th-generation stealth fighter jet. The AMCA is expected to complement the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft and will significantly enhance India’s aerial combat capabilities in the years ahead.

What is the AMCA Fighter Jet?

The Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft is a medium-weight fighter designed for deep-penetration strike roles with stealth features, advanced sensors and supercruise capability. It will play a central role in modernising the Indian Air Force and aims to match global standards in air superiority and precision strike capabilities.

A Collaborative Push for Self-Reliance

The Ministry of Defence has invited participation from Indian private sector companies to execute the AMCA project. Eligible firms can participate independently, through joint ventures or consortia. This inclusive approach is intended to boost the domestic aerospace and defence manufacturing ecosystem under the ‘Made in India’ initiative.

Rising China-Pakistan Axis and India’s Strategic Response

The project’s approval comes against the backdrop of heightened regional tensions. China now supplies more than 80% of Pakistan’s defence imports and engages in regular joint exercises with Pakistan’s military. A recent US intelligence report confirmed that Pakistan is the primary recipient of Chinese military and technological support, including for weapons of mass destruction programmes.

Strengthening India's Aerial Deterrence

India’s approval of the AMCA is part of a broader strategy to close the capability gap with regional rivals. While China has already inducted its fifth-generation Chengdu J-20 fighters, India is preparing to match this capability through its own technological advancement. The Cabinet Committee on Security had earlier granted in-principle approval to the AMCA, reflecting its national importance.

Development Cost and Future Outlook

The AMCA project is expected to cost approximately ₹15,000 crore. Once operational, it will become a key component of India’s frontline defence. The Indian Air Force has strongly supported the development, recognising the need for an advanced fighter jet platform in its long-term strategy.

Tejas Developed by HAL

India’s confidence in executing the AMCA project stems from its experience with the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft. Developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, Tejas has proven effective in air combat, reconnaissance and anti-ship missions. This success provides a solid foundation for the more advanced AMCA.

Parallel Procurement: MRFA Acquisition in Progress

Alongside the AMCA initiative, India is also pursuing the acquisition of 114 Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) through a global tender estimated at around USD 18 billion. This is among the largest military procurement programmes in the world and is aimed at enhancing the operational flexibility of the Indian Air Force.

Conclusion

The approval of the AMCA programme reflects India’s commitment to self-reliance in defence manufacturing and signals a strategic shift in response to changing geopolitical realities. As India moves ahead with the AMCA and other procurement plans, it aims to secure its airspace with indigenous solutions, amid evolving regional challenges.
