Amazon Developing New Smartphone Built Around AI Alexa: Report

Amazon is developing a smartphone designed to connect its services into a single interface, according to a Reuters report.
The device is to bring together shopping, streaming and other offerings such as Prime Video, Prime Music, and food delivery through partners like Grubhub. The idea is to reduce the need to switch between separate applications.
The project is internally referred to as “Transformer” and is being handled by the company’s devices and services unit.
Role of Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence is expected to form the core of the device’s functionality. The report indicates that users may be able to access services directly through prompts, rather than relying on traditional app-based navigation.
This could limit dependence on app stores and change how services are accessed on the device.
Alexa is likely to be central to this experience, acting as the main interface for interactions. However, it is not expected to function as the operating system itself.
Development Status and Uncertainty
The timeline for the smartphone has not been disclosed. The report noted that the project remains subject to internal review and could be shelved depending on strategic priorities or financial considerations.
The development is part of an effort linked to Jeff Bezos’ earlier focus on voice-led computing, where a digital assistant remains continuously available.
Earlier Market Exit
Amazon last entered the smartphone segment in 2014 with the Fire Phone. The device was discontinued within a year after limited market acceptance.
It had attempted to integrate Amazon’s services into the user experience but failed to gain traction.

Conclusion
The current project indicates a renewed attempt to build a smartphone centred on AI-based interaction and service integration, although there is no clarity on its commercial rollout.
