Elon Musk has announced a new semiconductor project, ‘Terafab’, for producing chips for artificial intelligence, robotics and related systems, as per AFP report.
The facility will be located near Austin, Texas, and operated jointly by Tesla and SpaceX. The announcement was made on 21 March 2026.
The plant is expected to generate computing output of 1 terawatt annually, equivalent to one trillion watts. This is close to the total electricity generation capacity of the United States.
The site is planned as a fully integrated unit, handling chip design, manufacturing, testing, and upgrades internally.
Terafab is expected to produce 2-nanometre chips, 2 categories are planned. One set will support edge and inference computing, used in Tesla’s vehicles, robotaxis, and humanoid robots.
Another set will be for higher-performance computing requirements linked to SpaceX and Musk’s AI venture, xAI.
The project is expected to scale to support 100-200 gigawatts of computing capacity on Earth. It also includes plans to extend capacity to 1 terawatt for space-based systems over time.
This follows concerns about the availability of high-performance chips. Musk has said demand from Tesla and SpaceX could exceed current supply levels in the coming years. Existing suppliers include Samsung, TSMC, and Micron.
He has also highlighted risks associated with reliance on overseas manufacturing, particularly in Taiwan. The project is intended to build domestic capacity to reduce exposure to such risks.
The project includes plans linked to space-based computing. Musk outlined the concept of data centre satellites, starting with smaller units capable of around 100 kilowatts of power. Larger systems could reach megawatt-scale capacity.
SpaceX has applied to deploy up to 1 million such satellites, forming a network to handle computing workloads in orbit.
The project is estimated to cost between $20 billion and $25 billion. Semiconductor manufacturing requires significant capital and relies on specialised equipment sourced from multiple regions, including Europe.
Musk has not previously led a semiconductor manufacturing project, and no timeline for production has been disclosed.
