Western Railway has introduced a new QR code-based facility to simplify and speed up the refund process for failed digital payments.

The service, named SARAL or Smart Assistant and Refund Access Link, was launched at a press conference held at the Western Railway headquarters in Mumbai. The initiative aims to provide passengers with an easier way to claim refunds when digital payment transactions fail during ticket bookings.

How the SARAL Facility Works

Under the SARAL system, passengers can file refund claims by simply scanning a QR code provided by Western Railway. After scanning the code, users will be directed to an online form where they must enter details of the failed transaction and upload proof of payment.

Once submitted, the information will be automatically forwarded to the Centre for Railway Information Systems and the State Bank of India for verification. This process is expected to streamline the refund procedure and reduce delays that passengers often experience.

Pilot Launch in Mumbai Division

The SARAL facility has been introduced on a pilot basis in the Mumbai division of Western Railway. Authorities stated that the service may be expanded to other divisions depending on passenger response and the effectiveness of the system.

Officials noted that nearly 48% of ticket booking transactions are now conducted through digital payment modes. However, technical issues can sometimes lead to payment failures where money is deducted but tickets are not generated.

Benefits for Passengers

Currently, passengers facing such issues often need to visit railway booking counters to submit refund requests. With SARAL, passengers can file claims from anywhere, eliminating the need for physical visits.

The system also keeps passengers informed throughout the process. Updates about the refund status will be sent through email, and users will also receive a tracking link to monitor the progress of their claim.

Conclusion

The introduction of the SARAL QR code facility reflects Western Railway’s efforts to improve passenger convenience and enhance digital services. By enabling online refund claims for failed transactions, the initiative aims to make the process quicker, simpler and more efficient for railway passengers.
