Uttar Pradesh is set to witness a major renewable energy boost, with public and private sector solar projects worth around ₹35,000 crore expected to come up across the state. The projects aim to help UP achieve its ambitious solar power capacity target of 22,000 megawatts (MW) by 2027–28, including the development of seven solar energy parks with a combined capacity of 3,700 MW.
According to Narendra Bhooshan, Additional Chief Secretary, Energy and Alternative Energy Sources, “These solar power projects will be set up by leading renewable energy companies including NHPC, THDC, and Avaada Group.”
Of the total capacity goal, 8,000 MW worth of projects have already been commissioned or are currently under development. The remaining 14,000 MW will be implemented through solar parks, rooftop systems, floating plants, and standalone power projects.
UP has recently emerged as the top-performing state under the PM Surya Ghar scheme, reflecting its rapid progress in renewable energy adoption. To expand infrastructure, the UP New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA) has signed joint ventures with Tusco Limited, Bundelkhand Solar Energy Limited, and Lucknow Solar Power Development Corporation Limited for solar park development.
Under the UP Solar Energy Policy 2022, the state government is driving growth through multiple models. So far, the Solar Rooftop Scheme has achieved 900 MW capacity in the domestic sector, with further expansion planned for government buildings under Capex and RESCO models.
The RESCO (Renewable Energy Service Company) model enables consumers to use solar energy on a ‘pay-as-you-save’ basis without upfront investment, transferring plant ownership after a fixed period.
Additionally, plans are underway to develop floating solar power plants across 37 major reservoirs in the state to optimise space utilisation and expand renewable capacity.
Under the Bioenergy Policy 2022, UP has set up compressed biogas (CBG) plants with a daily capacity of 250 tonnes, among the highest in India. Furthermore, as part of the central government’s Model Solar Village Programme, one village in every district will be transformed into a Model Solar Village, integrating renewable power generation with rural development.
