The Uttar Pradesh government has introduced a new rule requiring all eggs sold in the state to carry clear details of their production and expiry dates, with the regulation set to take effect from April 1, as per news reports. The move aims to improve quality transparency and safeguard consumer health.

Mandatory Labelling to Improve Transparency

Under the new guidelines, poultry farmers and suppliers must stamp each egg with the date it was laid along with its expiry timeline. The directive is intended to help consumers assess freshness at the point of purchase and make better-informed decisions.

"Any trader or producer who fails to comply with this rule could face destruction or be declared unfit for human consumption," the report states.

Officials said the initiative is designed to address gaps in quality checks and ensure that eggs sold in the market meet basic safety standards.

Storage Conditions Determine Egg Safety

Eggs typically remain safe for consumption for up to two weeks from the date of laying when stored at temperatures around 30°C. However, proper refrigeration between 2°C and 8°C can extend their shelf life to nearly five weeks.

Regulatory norms also specify that eggs should not be stored alongside vegetables due to differing temperature requirements, which can affect product quality.

Limited Cold Storage Capacity in State

Despite the new regulation, infrastructure challenges persist. Uttar Pradesh currently has only two dedicated egg cold storage facilities, located in Agra and Jhansi, raising concerns about effective implementation across the state.

Trigger: Inspections And Consumer Complaints

The decision follows inspections that revealed lapses in compliance among egg sellers. Mukesh Meshram, Additional Chief Secretary of the Animal Husbandry and Dairy Department, highlighted the issue.

"Eggs were being sold without proper checks, and consumers were unaware of their quality or freshness," he said.

The move also comes amid rising consumer complaints on social media regarding poor product quality. In some cases, users reported receiving rotten eggs through quick-commerce platforms, with visuals showing discolouration and foul odour.

Conclusion

By enforcing labelling standards, the state aims to bring greater accountability to the supply chain, though addressing storage infrastructure gaps will remain critical for ensuring consistent quality and compliance.
