India is witnessing a steady increase in data consumption, supported by the growing adoption of 5G smartphones and expanded network coverage. Improved connectivity, along with more affordable devices, has enabled a wider user base to access high-speed internet services.
This trend has contributed to higher average data usage per user, with both urban and rural areas participating in the shift towards data-intensive activities.
The expansion of 5G smartphone shipments has played a central role in increasing data usage. In 2025, shipments of 5G-enabled devices grew notably, accounting for a significant share of total smartphone shipments.
Affordable devices, particularly in the lower price segments, have made 5G technology more accessible. This has supported broader adoption across different income groups and regions, including semi-urban and rural areas.
With faster speeds and lower latency, users transitioning from 4G to 5G tend to consume more data. On average, data usage per user has increased considerably over the year.
Estimates indicate that monthly data consumption per user rose from around 21.5 GB in early 2025 to nearly 30 GB by the end of the year. This reflects a shift towards more frequent and data-heavy digital activities.
The overall volume of wireless data traffic in India has also expanded significantly. Total data traffic nearly doubled within a year, with 5G accounting for a growing share of this increase.
This rise is attributed to wider 5G coverage and increased usage across applications that require higher bandwidth. As more users migrate to 5G networks, the contribution of 5G to total data traffic continues to grow.
Several factors are contributing to the increase in data consumption. High-definition video streaming, short-form content and mobile gaming have become more common among users.
Telecom operators have also introduced data plans that support higher usage, encouraging users to engage more frequently with digital platforms. Fixed wireless access services powered by 5G have further contributed to this trend.
The increase in data usage is particularly noticeable in rural regions, where adoption of entry-level 5G smartphones has accelerated. Compared to urban areas, rural data consumption has grown at a faster pace.
This trend indicates expanding digital access and changing usage patterns, as more users in these areas adopt internet-based services for communication, entertainment and information.
Telecom companies are exploring ways to manage and monetise the rising demand for data services. As consumption increases, operators are focusing on improving network capacity and identifying revenue opportunities linked to higher data usage.
The growth in average revenue per user is likely to depend on how effectively telecom providers align their pricing strategies with evolving consumption patterns.

The rise in 5G smartphone adoption is contributing to a measurable increase in data consumption across India. With continued network expansion and broader device accessibility, this trend is expected to persist. The evolving usage patterns highlight the growing importance of digital connectivity in everyday life, while also presenting opportunities and challenges for telecom operators.
