Puducherry has announced a 20% increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) for weavers in Puducherry. This hike will come into effect from August 1, 2025, and is expected to provide much-needed financial relief to families engaged in handloom weaving.

Chief Minister Rangasamy made this announcement while launching the ‘5’ Skill Development (SAMARTH) training programme at the Puducherry State Co-operative Union on Thursday.

Is Handloom Weaving Dying in Puducherry?

Speaking at the event, CM Rangasamy highlighted the once-rich tradition of weaving in the Union Territory. He said that weaving was a major occupation in Puducherry in the past, second only to agriculture. At one point, int, handloom products from Puducherry were exported to other countries.

However, over time, the number of active weaver families has declined sharply. Today, only about 150 families continue to practice this traditional craft.

CM Rangaswamy is Urging Youth to Support Handlooms

The Chief Minister pointed out that the handloom industry is now struggling. The decline in demand and lack of buyers have forced many skilled weavers to shift to other professions. He appealed to the younger generation to help revive the industry by choosing and wearing handloom products more often.

Prizes and Toolkits Distributed

During the event, CM Rangasamy also distributed cash prizes to experienced handloom weavers in recognition of their craftsmanship. Additionally, toolkits were handed over to new trainees, encouraging skill development and self-employment.

Conclusion

The government’s decision to raise DA for weavers and launch new training programmes shows its intent to support the handloom sector. While financial aid is welcome, reviving the industry will also need greater awareness and public support.
