The government has completed the construction of 2.81 crore houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana–Gramin (PMAY-G) as of August 4, 2025. This progress is part of a larger plan to provide safe and affordable housing to rural families across India. The scheme’s target has now been extended to build 2 crore more houses over the next five years.

What is the Progress So Far on PM Awaas Yojana-Gramin?

Launched in April 2016, PMAY-G initially aimed to build 2.95 crore houses from 2016-17 to 2023-24. However, the Ministry has allocated a total target of 4.12 crore houses to various states and Union Territories (UTs). Out of these, states have sanctioned 3.84 crore houses, with 2.81 crore already completed.

Most states have made significant progress. Uttar Pradesh has completed nearly all sanctioned houses, while Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, and Ladakh are also close to full implementation. Some states, including Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Chhattisgarh, have slower completion rates.

State-wise Highlights for PM Awaas Yojana-Gramin

States like Bihar and Madhya Pradesh have completed over 38 lakh houses each, showing strong efforts in rural housing. In contrast, Karnataka has sanctioned about 5.17 lakh houses but completed only around 1.58 lakh, reflecting the need to speed up work there.

Union Territories like Delhi, Chandigarh, and Puducherry are not implementing the scheme, and Telangana has not participated since the start. To identify more eligible families, a new survey is underway using the Awaas+ 2024 mobile app with eKYC face-based authentication.

What is PM Awaas Yojana-Gramin?

PMAY-G helps rural families build pucca (permanent) houses with basic amenities, improving their quality of life. This contributes to the government’s larger goal of ‘Housing for All’ and rural development.

Furthermore, the Union Cabinet has approved extending the scheme from 2024-25 to 2028-29 to build an additional 2 crore houses. This extension ensures more rural families will benefit and move towards better living conditions.
