State-run Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) are considering extending the sale of 10-kg composite LPG cylinders to commercial consumers, according to Atul Mathur's Times of India report.
The cylinders are currently available only in selected markets for domestic customers. If the proposal is approved, they will be sold at commercial LPG prices through LPG distributors and selected retail outlets.
The proposed expansion is intended for users who do not require the standard 19-kg commercial cylinder. The category includes street food vendors, tea stalls, small cafés, migrant workers, tenants, and students.
These users often operate from small premises or temporary locations where storing a larger cylinder is not practical. The 10-kg cylinder would provide another size option within the commercial LPG segment rather than replacing existing cylinders.
Unlike conventional steel cylinders, the 10-kg model is made using high-density polyethylene (HDPE)-based composite material with a three-layer construction. It weighs nearly 50% less than a steel cylinder of similar capacity, making it easier to transport and handle.
The cylinder also has a translucent outer body, allowing users to check the remaining LPG level without using a separate gauge. This feature helps consumers estimate when a refill may be needed.
OMCs currently sell 19-kg, 5-kg, and 2-kg cylinders for commercial consumers and for those without domestic LPG connections. The 19-kg cylinder remains the standard option for restaurants and larger commercial establishments, while the smaller cylinders are generally used where LPG consumption is lower.
Commercial LPG continues to be priced higher than domestic cooking gas. In Delhi, a 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinder is priced at ₹942. The 19-kg commercial cylinder costs ₹2,930, while a 5-kg commercial cylinder is priced at ₹808.50.
The composite cylinders are already sold for domestic consumers under different brand names, including IndianOil's Indane Xtralight, HPCL's HP Gas Ojas and BPCL's Bharatgas Lite.

If approved, the 10-kg composite cylinder will become an additional option for commercial LPG consumers alongside the existing 19-kg, 5-kg and 2-kg cylinders.
