Odisha Government Approves ₹2,000 Crore Deep Sea Fishing Initiative to Boost Marine Exports

The Odisha government has sanctioned a deep sea fishing mission with an outlay of over ₹2,000 crore to establish the state as a marine export hub as per The PTI news report. This plan, spanning 2026-2036, will enhance fish production and employment opportunities.
Details of the Odisha Deep Sea Fishing Initiative
On July 2, 2026, a proposal for the deep sea fishing mission was approved at a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. This initiative from the Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Department is designed to harness Odisha's offshore fisheries potential and catalyse growth in the blue economy, according to Chief Secretary Anu Garg.
The mission's objectives include promoting sustainable fishing practices, modernising fisheries infrastructure, and increasing seafood exports. It is estimated that ₹2,295.45 crore will be spent over a 10-year period, with implementation occurring in phases through the convergence of various schemes and partnerships.
Expected Outcomes of the Mission
The state aims to generate an annual increase of 2 lakh metric tonnes in marine fish production, creating over 50,000 employment opportunities. Additionally, Odisha's marine exports are expected to hike to ₹5,000 crore annually by 2036, according to officials.

Additional Approvals by the Odisha Cabinet
Apart from the fishing mission, the Odisha cabinet approved multiple infrastructure projects. These include flyovers between Jaydev Vihar and Nandankanan in Bhubaneswar, with a budget of ₹579 crore, targeted for completion within 2 years.
The establishment of State Data Centre 2.0 was also approved, involving a ₹268.44 crore upgrade of the existing data centre. Furthermore, two in-stream storage structures will be constructed on the Tel and Ong rivers, enhancing water resource management.
Focus on Education and Welfare Programmes
In addition to infrastructure, the cabinet approved mid-day meals for 46.6 lakh secondary school students under the Mukhyamantri Poshan Yojana, backed by an expenditure of ₹3,506.99 crore over the next 4 years.
