As temperatures rise across several parts of India, electricity demand has been moving closer to peak levels. Concerns around potential power shortages have emerged in this context.
However, government officials have indicated that the power system remains adequately prepared, supported by sufficient coal reserves, diversified energy sources and logistical readiness to manage demand fluctuations.
The Union Power Ministry has stated that there is no shortage of coal for thermal power generation. Thermal power plants currently hold around 53 million tonnes of coal, which is estimated to be sufficient to meet approximately 18 to 19 days of demand.
This level of inventory is seen as adequate to support electricity generation during periods of elevated consumption.
As per the CNBC-TV18 news report, peak power demand on 2 May reached 229 GW in the afternoon and was fully met. Thermal power contributed 135 GW to this demand, while solar and wind sources added 59 GW and 16 GW respectively. The remaining requirement was met through hydro, nuclear and gas-based generation.
The report also noted that the highest peak demand recorded so far this year stands at 256 GW, which was also met without any supply disruptions.
Renewable energy sources, particularly solar and wind, continue to play a growing role in meeting electricity demand. Their contribution during peak hours has supported the overall supply mix, reducing pressure on conventional sources.
The diversified energy mix helps in managing fluctuations in demand while maintaining system stability.
As per the CNBC-TV18 news report, the Coal Ministry indicated that total coal stocks remain substantial across the supply chain. Around 50.90 million tonnes are available at thermal power plants, while Coal India holds approximately 123 million tonnes, and captive mines account for an additional 16 million tonnes.
The Ministry also highlighted that logistics support, including coordination with the Railways, is in place to ensure continuous coal supply to power plants.
Rising temperatures and heatwave conditions have raised concerns about electricity availability. However, officials have emphasised that the system has been able to meet demand levels without outages so far.
Preparedness measures, including fuel availability and infrastructure readiness, are aimed at maintaining uninterrupted power supply during peak periods.

The current assessment by the government indicates that coal availability and power generation capacity remain sufficient to meet rising electricity demand. With support from renewable energy and logistics infrastructure, the system appears positioned to manage near-term demand pressures. Continued monitoring of consumption patterns and supply conditions will remain important in the coming weeks.
