Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has introduced an indigenous ethanol-powered cooking stove technology as part of India’s broader biofuel and clean energy initiatives.

The newly showcased stove uses an ethanol-water blend to produce cooking flames and is being positioned as a potential alternative to conventional LPG-based cooking systems. The development aligns with ongoing efforts to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels and promote domestic biofuel adoption across sectors.

Gadkari Showcases Ethanol Cooking Stove Technology

During a public event held in Nagpur on May 25, 2026, Nitin Gadkari presented a cooking stove developed using ethanol-based fuel technology.

According to the minister, the stove operates using a blend of ethanol and water, which generates a flame suitable for household cooking purposes.

The technology has been developed domestically and is intended to support India’s efforts towards cleaner and alternative energy solutions.

Ethanol Blend Claimed to Lower Cooking Costs

Gadkari stated that mixing around 7% ethanol with water can create a flame capable of being used for cooking applications.

He indicated that the operating cost of the ethanol-based stove could be lower compared to commercial LPG cylinders currently used by households.

The minister suggested that wider adoption of such technology may help reduce household fuel expenses over time.

Focus on Biofuels and Energy Security

The introduction of ethanol-based cooking technology forms part of India’s broader push towards biofuel expansion and reduced dependence on imported crude oil and petroleum products.

India has been increasing ethanol usage across sectors, particularly through ethanol blending programmes in the transport industry.

The government has also been encouraging alternative fuel technologies as part of its clean energy and sustainability initiatives.

Potential Impact on Domestic Energy Consumption

If adopted at scale, ethanol-based cooking systems could contribute towards diversification of household cooking fuel sources.

The technology may also support domestic ethanol production and create additional demand within the agricultural and biofuel ecosystem.

However, wider commercial deployment would likely depend on factors such as affordability, fuel availability, infrastructure and consumer acceptance.

Conclusion

The ethanol-based cooking stove introduced by Nitin Gadkari highlights India’s continued focus on alternative fuel technologies and biofuel development. While the innovation is being positioned as a lower-cost alternative to LPG, its long-term adoption and commercial viability may depend on implementation, scalability and consumer response in the coming years.
