From April 10, 2026, all national highway toll plazas in India will move to a completely cashless system. Commuters will be able to pay toll charges only through FASTag or UPI. The move aims to reduce traffic congestion and make travel faster and smoother.

No Cash Payments At Toll Booths

Cash payments will no longer be accepted at toll plazas. Travellers without FASTag can still pay using UPI, but they will have to pay 25% extra over the regular toll fee.

Penalties For Not Paying Digitally

As per Rule 14 of the National Highways Fee Rules (2008):

  • Vehicles that do not pay toll digitally may be denied entry on highways.
  • An e-notice will be issued for unpaid tolls.
  • If payment is not made within 3 days, the penalty will double.

These steps are meant to push digital payments and keep traffic moving efficiently.

No More ID Card Exemptions

Government officials and defence personnel will no longer be allowed to skip toll payments by showing ID cards when travelling in private vehicles. Only vehicles officially eligible under the rules will receive Exempted FASTags. Others must pay toll or use the FASTag Annual Pass.

FASTag Annual Pass Benefits

Frequent highway travellers can benefit from the FASTag Annual Pass. It allows unlimited travel on national highways without paying toll each time, making it cost-effective for regular commuters.

Conclusion

India’s shift to fully digital toll payments marks a major step toward faster and smoother highway travel. With FASTag and UPI becoming mandatory, commuters will need to prepare for a cashless toll experience from April 10.
