In a significant move aimed at maintaining public safety and protecting the interests of licensed rickshaw and taxi drivers, the Maharashtra government has ordered the shutdown of unauthorised bike taxi apps, as per PTI reports.

Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik's recent directive stems from concerns about safety and legal compliance of these services.

Maharashtra's Directive on Bike Taxi Services

On May 12, 2026, Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik instructed the cyber crime department to immediately shut down unauthorised bike taxi apps.

This move targets companies like Ola, Uber, and Rapido, which have been operating such services without necessary permissions. Sarnaik underscored the importance of adhering to the state's transport regulations to ensure public safety.

Illegal bike taxi operations have been criticised for bypassing safety regulations, posing a risk to passengers. The minister outlined the lack of driver verification, insurance coverage, and dedicated women's safety measures as significant concerns.

Impacts on Licensed Drivers and Public Safety

By allowing unauthorised bike taxis to operate, there is a direct impact on licensed rickshaw and taxi drivers' livelihoods. These unauthorised services conduct transactions without state approval, leading to market disruptions.

The minister's directive aims to restore balance in the market and ensure that all operators comply with legal requirements.

Legal Action and Compliance Measures

Transport Minister Sarnaik emphasised the need for strict legal action against unauthorised operators under the Information Technology Act and Motor Vehicles Act.

The state believes that these apps are in clear violation of established laws, hence the necessity for immediate shutdown and prosecution.

The recent accident in Mumbai's Bandra Link Road, which resulted in a casualty, highlights the potential risks of these unregulated services. It strengthens the state's resolve to demand full compliance from all transportation businesses.

Conclusion

Maharashtra is taking significant measures to curb the operations of unauthorised bike taxi services. This initiative underscores the government's commitment to public safety and the protection of licensed drivers' livelihoods. Enforcing compliance with state laws remains a priority for the authorities.
