Imagine receiving a loud alert on your phone warning you about an approaching cyclone, earthquake, or chemical leak seconds before the situation turns critical. That is exactly what India’s latest disaster communication technology aims to achieve.
In a major boost to the country's disaster preparedness efforts, the government has launched a new mobile-based emergency alert system that can send near real-time warnings directly to people in affected areas. The initiative, unveiled by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, has been developed by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in partnership with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
The backbone of the system is SACHET, an alert platform developed by Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT). The platform is already being used across India and has sent billions of SMS-based alerts in multiple Indian languages.
The latest upgrade adds Cell Broadcast technology, a system that allows authorities to send alerts to every mobile phone in a specific location at the same time. Unlike SMS messages, which can be delayed when networks are busy, Cell Broadcast messages are delivered almost instantly through mobile towers.
One of the biggest advantages of the new system is that it focuses only on people who are actually at risk. For example, if a tsunami warning is issued for a coastal district, only people in that area will receive the alert.
These messages are designed to grab attention. They may appear as pop-ups on mobile screens and can trigger loud sounds or vibrations, ensuring that users notice them immediately.
The technology can also reach roaming users and does not depend on having a person's phone number.
The system will be used for a wide range of emergencies, including earthquakes, cyclones, lightning strikes, gas leaks, chemical accidents, and other public safety threats.
Alerts may include:
Messages will be available in regional languages, making them easier for people across the country to understand and act upon.

When disaster strikes, every second matters. India's new indigenous alert system is designed to make sure critical information reaches people quickly, clearly, and directly on their phones. By combining advanced technology with local language support and location-specific alerts, the government hopes to create a safer and more prepared nation, one alert at a time.
