Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has proposed a ban on social media use for children below the age of 16 in the state, bringing the debate on digital exposure and child welfare into sharper focus.

Budget Proposal Draws Attention

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on March 6, 2026, proposed a ban on social media use for children below the age of 16 in the state. The announcement was made as the Chief Minister presented his 17th budget.

"With the objective of preventing adverse effects of increasing mobile usage on children, usage of social media will be banned for children under the age of 16," Siddaramaiah said.

Concerns Behind the Move

The proposal comes at a time when concerns over excessive screen time are growing. Policymakers believe that unregulated smartphone access can affect academic focus, alter behaviour, and deepen mental health challenges among teenagers.

There is also concern that social media exposure may bring children into contact with harmful content and unsafe networks.

Wider Discussion on Feasibility

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had raised the issue during a discussion with vice chancellors of government universities on Sunday, seeking their views on the feasibility and implications of such a move.

This suggests that the proposal is being examined not only as a policy measure but also as a broader social and educational issue.

Budget Framed Around Future Readiness

Presenting the Budget, Siddaramaiah said Karnataka plays a distinctive role in national and international trade, while rapid progress in Artificial Intelligence is reshaping production systems across the world.

He added that science and technology are increasingly influencing the direction of the state. In that context, he said the Budget was presented with responsibility and foresight, along with the resolve to "turn fire into light."
