
India’s unemployment rate for individuals aged 15 years and above rose slightly in March 2026, according to the latest data released by the National Statistics Office. The rate moved to 5.1% from 4.9% recorded in February 2026, driven mainly by an uptick in urban unemployment.
The Periodic Labour Force Survey continues to serve as the primary tool for tracking monthly labour market indicators across the country. The March release marks the twelfth monthly bulletin since the updated PLFS methodology took effect in January 2025.
The unemployment rate among persons aged 15 and above increased to 5.1% in March 2026. Urban unemployment rose from 6.6% in February 2026 to 6.8% in March 2026, contributing significantly to the overall rise.
Rural female unemployment remained largely unchanged during the month. Meanwhile, male unemployment in rural areas registered a marginal increase compared with February 2026.
The PLFS generates monthly and quarterly estimates of labour force indicators using a revised methodology introduced in January 2025. This system provides continuous data collection and improved tracking of labour market trends.
Information for the March 2026 bulletin was gathered from a total of 3,75,262 surveyed individuals across India. These results offer insight into both participation levels and employment dynamics at national and regional levels.
The overall labour force participation rate among those aged 15 years and above stood at 55.4% in March 2026. This was slightly lower than the 55.9% seen in February 2026, reflecting softer participation during the month.
Rural LFPR declined to 58% in March 2026 from 58.7% the previous month. Urban LFPR, however, remained largely stable, maintaining its recent trajectory.
Female labour force participation dropped to 34.4% in March 2026 from 35.3% in February 2026. In rural areas, female participation was recorded at 38.9%, contrasting with 25.2% in urban regions.
The worker population ratio for persons aged 15 and above was reported at 52.6% in March 2026. Rural WPR fell to 55.5% from 56.3% in February 2026, while urban WPR edged down slightly to 46.8%.

The rise in the unemployment rate during March 2026 was primarily influenced by higher urban joblessness. Labour force participation trends indicated marginal softening across several demographic categories.
The PLFS results continue to highlight differences between rural and urban employment patterns. These monthly indicators provide a consistent picture of evolving labour market conditions across the country.
