
Indian Railways reported steady operational growth during June 2026, with higher freight loading and passenger traffic compared with the corresponding month last year. According to the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the national transporter carried 142.21 million tonnes of freight, up 4% year-on-year, while passenger traffic reached 63.81 crore during the month.
According to the PIB, Indian Railways loaded 142.21 million tonnes of freight in June 2026, compared with 136.71 million tonnes in June 2025, registering a 4% year-on-year increase.
Freight earnings also increased by 3%, generating approximately ₹430 crore of additional revenue over the corresponding month last year.
Several commodity segments registered growth during June 2026.
Fertiliser loading increased by 19.1%.
Balance Other Goods grew by 17.3%.
Iron Ore loading rose by 9.4%.
Clinker loading increased by 7.2%.
Domestic Coal loading grew by 4.9%.
Total Coal loading increased by 3.6%.
Indian Railways also supplied 7% more domestic coal to thermal power plants during June 2026 compared with the corresponding month last year to support higher electricity demand during the extended summer season.
Indian Railways continued its growth momentum during the first quarter of FY27 (April-June 2026).
According to the PIB, freight loading reached 419.08 million tonnes during Q1 FY27, compared with 413.05 million tonnes during the corresponding quarter of FY26.
Among major commodities during the quarter:
Iron Ore loading increased by 7.44%.
Clinker loading rose by 6.54%.
Balance & Other Goods recorded growth of 12.16%.
Passenger traffic also recorded steady growth during June 2026. Indian Railways carried 63.81 crore passengers, compared with 62.37 crore passengers in June 2025.
The Non-Suburban segment, covering both short- and long-distance travel, grew 3.9%, with passenger numbers increasing from 28.90 crore to 30.04 crore.
The Suburban segment recorded 0.9% growth, with passenger traffic rising from 33.46 crore to 33.77 crore.
The number of Vande Bharat train services has increased to 164, including the recently introduced Vande Bharat Sleeper service between Howrah and Kamakhya.
The number of Amrit Bharat train services has reached 72, with 4 new services inaugurated during June 2026 to strengthen affordable long-distance connectivity.
The Indian Railways recorded steady growth in both freight transportation and passenger traffic during June 2026. Freight loading increased by 4% year-on-year to 142.21 million tonnes, while passenger traffic reached 63.81 crore. The expansion of Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat services, along with higher freight movement across key commodities, reflects continued operational activity during the month.
