Kavach 4.0, the Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system developed in India, has been officially commissioned on the Bajwa (Vadodara) to Ahmedabad rail section, covering 96 km and 17 stations. This rollout includes major infrastructure upgrades aimed at increasing operational safety for trains.
The Indian Railways has implemented Kavach 4.0 across the 96 km stretch from Bajwa in Vadodara to Ahmedabad. This deployment includes infrastructure such as 23 towers, 20 Kavach huts, and 192 km of optical fibre cable.
A total of 2,872 RFID tags have been installed to support the functioning of the system. The Kavach-enabled Sankalp Fast Passenger (59549/59550), operated with WAP-7 locomotives and 11 LHB coaches, was the first train to use the system on this route.
Kavach 4.0 functions by intervening automatically to prevent Signal Passed at Danger (SPAD) incidents and unauthorised speed. The system enables automated train braking, monitors sectional speed, loop line speed limits, and permanent speed restrictions.
It also includes protections against head-on and rear-end collisions. Extra features include automatic whistling at level crossings and an SOS facility for emergencies.

This version offers better location accuracy and detailed signalling in complex station yards. It connects station-to-station via optical fibre for quicker communication and integrates directly with electronic interlocking, enhancing coordination with existing infrastructure. The system has been validated to the SIL-4 standard, recognised as one of the highest in safety certification.
Beyond this 96 km section, Indian Railways has implemented Kavach over more than 2,200 route kilometres. Designed and developed indigenously, Kavach represents Indian Railways' effort to adopt advanced technology tailored to its operational needs.
The commissioning of Kavach 4.0 on the Vadodara to Ahmedabad rail route brings improved safety and reliability to this corridor. The integration of this system marks an important development in ensuring safer train operations across the Indian Railways network.
