The Indian Navy has invited responses for acquiring 76 new Naval Utility Helicopters, aiming to enhance maritime operations and support both naval and coast guard missions. This move is part of India's defence modernisation and self-reliance initiatives.

Plans to Acquire 76 Helicopters for Dual Force Operations

As per the Request for Information (RFI) released on August 24, 2025, the Indian Navy seeks to procure 76 Naval Utility Helicopters (NUHs). Out of these, 51 units are designated for the Indian Navy, while 25 are intended for the Indian Coast Guard. These helicopters will play multifaceted roles such as maritime search and rescue, casualty evacuation, aerial firefighting, and low-intensity conflict missions.

Operational Requirements and Indigenous Focus

The helicopters must support ship and shore-based operations, function 24/7 in all weather conditions, and meet the demands of modern maritime warfare. Procurement will follow the Buy & Make (Indian) route under a single-stage, two-bid process. Vendors must submit separate technical and commercial bids, and selected proposals will undergo field trials in India on a no-cost, no-commitment basis.

Technology Transfer and Long-Term Maintenance Commitment

The Ministry of Defence expects interested vendors to propose a Transfer of Technology (ToT) package to support licensed production within India. Additionally, vendors must supply spares, maintenance tools, and undertake commitments such as an earnest money deposit and a performance-cum-warranty bond equivalent to 5% of the final contract value.

Submission Deadline and Evaluation Process

The deadline for submitting responses to the Directorate of Aircraft Acquisition at Naval Headquarters is October 17, 2025. All bids will be assessed at Naval Headquarters after technical and field evaluations, ensuring full compliance with the mission objectives and operational needs.

Conclusion

This initiative marks a significant advancement in India’s efforts to modernise its maritime forces. The 76-NUH project supports strategic capabilities, enhances operational readiness, and strengthens domestic defence manufacturing through technology transfer and local production.
