India’s wheat production is projected to witness steady growth during the 2025-26 crop year, supported by resilient output levels despite weather-related disruptions in some regions. According to the latest government estimates, wheat production is expected to remain above last year’s levels even after instances of unseasonal rainfall and hailstorms impacted certain areas.

The revised estimate reinforces expectations of strong domestic grain availability during the current crop year.

Wheat Output Estimated At 120.65 Million Tonnes

The agriculture ministry has projected wheat production at 120.65 million tonnes for the 2025-26 crop year (July–June), reflecting an increase of around 2.29% compared with the previous year.

The latest estimate is slightly higher than the ministry’s earlier forecast of 120.21 million tonnes and exceeds the 117.94 million tonnes produced during the 2024-25 crop year.

According to the ministry, wheat output has increased by around 27.12 lakh tonnes year-on-year despite weather-related challenges faced in certain growing regions.

Production Remains Stable Despite Weather Impact

The government maintained that wheat production has remained stable and resilient even after localised crop damage caused by untimely rainfall and hailstorms during the season.

The higher production estimate is expected to support domestic supply availability and help maintain adequate grain stocks.

Overall Foodgrain Production Also Expected To Rise

Apart from wheat, total foodgrain production in India is also projected to increase during the 2025-26 crop year. According to the ministry’s latest estimate, total foodgrain output could rise to 376.55 million tonnes compared with 357.73 million tonnes recorded in the previous year.

The increase reflects continued strength in the agricultural sector.

Conclusion

India’s wheat production is expected to reach a record 120.65 million tonnes in 2025-26, indicating stable output despite weather-related disruptions in some regions. The higher foodgrain production estimates could further strengthen domestic supply conditions and support agricultural growth during the current crop year.
