The Government of India is set to introduce a new toll collection mechanism aimed at improving traffic flow and reducing travel delays across national highways.
As per PTI report, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced that seamless, barrier-free tolling systems will be implemented across several national highways by December. The announcement was made at the Logistics Shakti Summit & Awards 2026.
The initiative is part of a broader push to modernise infrastructure and enhance efficiency in the logistics sector.
The new system will rely on a combination of advanced technologies, including Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) integrated with AI analytics and RFID-based electronic toll collection through FASTag.
Vehicles will be identified using high-performance cameras and FASTag readers, allowing toll charges to be processed without requiring vehicles to stop at toll plazas.
In cases of violations, electronic notices will be issued. Failure to comply with payments may lead to suspension of FASTag services along with penalties linked to the VAHAN database.
The government aims to reduce logistics costs further, as efficient infrastructure is considered essential for economic growth.
According to studies conducted by IIT Chennai, IIT Kanpur and IIM Bangalore, India’s logistics costs have already declined to about 10% from 16% earlier, supported by investments in expressways and economic corridors.
For comparison, logistics costs stand at around 12% in the United States and Europe, while China operates at a lower range of 8–10%.
Highlighting broader economic challenges, Gadkari noted that India depends on imports for about 87% of its oil requirements, with fossil fuel imports costing approximately ₹22 lakh crore annually. This dependency also contributes to environmental concerns.
The government is therefore focusing on alternative fuels, including biofuels and green hydrogen. He stated that reducing the cost of hydrogen fuel stations will be critical for wider adoption.

The rollout of barrier-free tolling reflects a technology-driven approach to improving infrastructure efficiency, while aligning with broader goals of reducing logistics costs and supporting sustainable energy transitions.
