India is intensifying efforts to boost rice shipments to the Philippines, which stands as the world’s largest rice importer. This strategic move aims to increase India’s market share in a country where rice accounts for a major portion of food imports.
Although India exported rice worth $11.83 billion globally in 2024-25, only $48.91 million of that reached the Philippines. Meanwhile, the Philippines imported rice worth $2.52 billion during the same period, indicating a large untapped potential for Indian exporters.
To bridge this gap, a key delegation of Indian agricultural exporters is scheduled to visit the Philippines in early September. They will explore trade possibilities not just for rice, but also for onions, potatoes, groundnuts, and meat products, with the objective of enhancing India's agricultural footprint in the Southeast Asian nation.
In 2024, the Philippines imported agricultural goods worth around $20 billion. India's share in this was only $413 million, barely 2% of total imports. Key Indian exports included bovine meat, rice, groundnut and tobacco. The new push aims to significantly improve this figure by fostering stronger trade relationships.
Complementing this effort, a delegation of Filipino food importers will visit India to participate in World Food India from September 25 to 28, 2025. This event serves as the country's largest food trade fair and provides a major platform for exporters to connect with global buyers.
India is not limiting its trade expansion to the Philippines alone. The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region, led by Russia, has also seen increased exports of Indian agricultural goods. Shipments to this region rose from $480 million in 2023-24 to $628 million in 2024-25. Indian trade bodies such as APEDA continue to participate in trade expos, including World Food Moscow, to expand their reach further.
The Philippines presents a significant market for Indian rice exports, with India now intensifying efforts to gain a greater market share. Strategic trade visits and participation in major food trade fairs are expected to catalyse substantial growth in the coming years.
