As per news reports, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will launch the first uncrewed mission of the Gaganyaan programme in December 2025. ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan confirmed that the mission, named G1, will carry Vyommitra, a half-humanoid robot designed to simulate human functions inside the spacecraft.
This test flight will evaluate systems ahead of India’s first human space mission.
Isro Chief V. Narayanan, at a press briefing, said Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, who recently participated in the Axiom-4 mission to the International Space Station, said his experience will provide valuable inputs for Gaganyaan and future projects like the Bharatiya Antariksh Station. Another astronaut, Group Captain Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair, also spoke about the mission, crediting ISRO’s large team effort as central to the programme’s progress.
Narayanan noted that ISRO has seen multiple developments in recent months. The agency has been testing cryogenic engine technology, releasing data from the Aditya L1 Sun mission, and monitoring the NISAR satellite, which was launched jointly with NASA in July 2025.
NISAR, described as the costliest Earth observation satellite developed so far, was placed in orbit by the GSLV launcher and has completed the unfurling of its antenna.
ISRO’s satellite systems currently support telemedicine, tele-education, television broadcasting, and real-time tracking. Around 8,600 trains and 21,000 shipping vessels are connected through these services. The agency has also been active in disaster warning efforts and contributes to 13 of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals through its programmes.
India’s space agency will soon launch a 6,500 kg communication satellite for the United States, adding to its track record of launching 433 satellites from 34 countries.

The G1 mission in December will be the first uncrewed step in India’s human spaceflight programme. The upcoming test with Vyommitra is intended to validate safety and operational systems before astronauts are sent into orbit in later phases of Gaganyaan.
