Department of Posts is targeting incremental revenue growth of ₹4,000 crore this year after delivering its highest revenue expansion in four decades during FY26, supported by operational reforms, technology upgrades and stricter performance monitoring, as per PTI news report.
Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, Minister of State for Communications, said the Department of Posts increased its revenue by ₹2,100 crore in FY26, taking total revenue to ₹15,296 crore from ₹13,218 crore in FY25.
According to Pemmasani, the increase was nearly 10 times the department’s average historical growth rate. The government now aims to raise incremental revenue to ₹4,000 crore during the current financial year.
The minister said every business segment within the department has been assigned targets as part of a broader plan to transform post offices from cost centres into profit centres over the next 3-4 years.
Pemmasani said the government studied operational bottlenecks, identified market opportunities and improved accountability systems before implementing stricter performance targets.
The Department of Posts also introduced regular monitoring mechanisms, operational reviews and reward systems to improve execution across regions.
According to the minister, chief post master generals were assigned specific performance targets after operational constraints were addressed. Written communication regarding accountability was initially sent to 15 chief post master generals, following which performance improved significantly.
Pemmasani added that the number of warning letters related to below-benchmark performance has now reduced to just one.
The department has also introduced several customer-focused initiatives including 24-hour and 48-hour speed post delivery services, digital tracking systems and OTP-based alerts.
The minister said technology enablement combined with target-based accountability has significantly improved operational efficiency and customer service standards.
To compete more effectively with private logistics companies, the Department of Posts has started round-the-clock operations at 214 post offices and extended service hours across nearly 4,000 post offices, with operating hours ranging from more than 7 hours up to 24 hours.
The government plans to further expand extended-hour services to additional locations to improve customer accessibility after regular office hours.
The Department of Posts is undergoing a major operational transformation focused on technology adoption, accountability and service modernisation as it seeks to strengthen revenue growth and improve competitiveness in India’s logistics and delivery sector.
