India, Nepal Discuss Next Phase of Power Sector Cooperation at JSC Meeting

India and Nepal have taken forward their energy partnership by reviewing the progress of ongoing power sector initiatives during the 13th Joint Steering Committee (JSC) on Power Sector Cooperation held in Pokhara, Nepal, as per an ANI news report. 

The discussions centred on strengthening collaboration across hydropower development, cross-border power trade, transmission infrastructure and new areas of clean energy cooperation as both countries assessed existing projects and future initiatives. 

Focus on Power Infrastructure 

A key part of the meeting was the review of bilateral projects covering hydropower generation, power trade and transmission infrastructure between the 2 countries. 

Both sides also welcomed the progress achieved on new transmission links, including the 400 kV Gorakhpur-New Butwal transmission line, while discussing ways to expedite ongoing and proposed power generation and transmission projects. 

Clean Energy and Technical Cooperation 

The 2 countries also exchanged views on the coordinated operation of the Indian and Nepali power grids to support closer energy integration. 

Cooperation in solar energy, green hydrogen and capacity building of Nepali experts also featured in the discussions, expanding the scope of bilateral engagement beyond conventional power projects. 

High-Level Meetings 

The Joint Steering Committee meeting was co-chaired by Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary, Ministry of Power, Government of India, and Sarita Dawadi, Secretary, Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Government of Nepal. 

Before the JSC, the 13th Joint Working Group (JWG) on Power Sector Cooperation met in Pokhara on Tuesday. It was co-chaired by Pankaj Kumar, Joint Secretary (Transmission), Ministry of Power, Government of India, and Sandip Kumar Dev, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Government of Nepal. 

Bilateral Engagement 

Ahead of the committee meeting, Power Secretary Pankaj Agarwal met Biraj Bhakta Shresha, Nepal's Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, on 14 July 2026. 

The discussions are expected to contribute to stronger cooperation between India and Nepal across power generation, transmission infrastructure and clean energy initiatives.

Conclusion 

The 13th Joint Steering Committee meeting reaffirmed the commitment of India and Nepal to deepen cooperation in the power sector through closer collaboration on hydropower, transmission connectivity, power trade, grid coordination and emerging clean energy technologies.
