India has initiated a review of countervailing duties on certain aluminium wire imports from Malaysia, with the current measures due to expire in September 2026, as per The Reuters report.
This follows a formal request from domestic producers and was notified by the government on Monday. Such reviews are typically conducted before the end of an existing duty period.
The request for review was filed by a group of manufacturers, including Hindalco Industries Limited, Vedanta Limited and Bharat Aluminium Company. The applicants have asked authorities to examine whether subsidised imports are likely to continue if duties are withdrawn.
The companies have cited concerns around import pricing and its potential effect on domestic output. Their submission led to the start of the investigation under the applicable trade remedy framework.
Countervailing duties were imposed earlier after findings that aluminium wire exports from Malaysia benefited from government subsidies. These duties are to offset any price advantage arising from such support.
The current duties apply to specific aluminium wire products and are set to lapse in September unless extended. A review is required to determine whether the conditions that led to their imposition still persist.
The investigation will assess import volumes, pricing trends and the financial position of domestic producers. It will also examine whether subsidy programmes in Malaysia continue and whether they influence export prices.
Authorities are expected to collect data from both domestic producers and exporters as part of the process. The findings will form the basis for a decision on whether to extend, revise or end the duties.

A final decision is expected before the September deadline. The outcome will determine the treatment of aluminium wire imports from Malaysia and the continuation of countervailing duties, if any.
