Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Friday launched the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) project at Puttaparthi in Sri Sathya Sai district, as per news reports.

The project is tied to India’s planned fifth-generation fighter aircraft programme. The facility will be developed over nearly 600 acres near the Karnataka border.

Officials said the project involves aircraft manufacturing infrastructure, integration facilities and testing systems linked to future combat aviation programmes.

Facilities Announced at Puttaparthi

During the programme, the two leaders inaugurated a core integration and flight testing centre meant for the AMCA and other indigenous aerospace projects.

The AMCA infrastructure project is estimated to cost around ₹2,000 crore. The broader AMCA development programme is valued at nearly ₹15,000 crore.

Officials said the project is expected to create around 7,500 jobs. Plans also include industrial facilities and supporting infrastructure around the aerospace project area.

Andhra Pradesh’s Bid for the Project

The state government had been pursuing the project for more than a year. Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh had presented the proposal to the defence ministry in February 2025. Further discussions and follow-up meetings were held later that year.

According to officials familiar with the matter, the availability of large land parcels and proximity to Bengaluru-based Aeronautical Development Agency facilities worked in Andhra Pradesh’s favour. The programme requires a dedicated flight-testing range, which was difficult to accommodate around Bengaluru because of limited land availability and airport traffic.

AMCA Programme

The AMCA is a proposed twin-engine stealth fighter aircraft being developed for the Indian Air Force under the Aeronautical Development Agency and the Defence Research and Development Organisation.

The aircraft is planned with stealth features, internal weapon bays, advanced sensors and electronic warfare systems. The programme is part of India’s broader effort to expand domestic defence manufacturing and reduce dependence on imported fighter aircraft.

Conclusion

The Puttaparthi facility is expected to support aircraft manufacturing and testing activities under India’s AMCA programme. Related aerospace and defence infrastructure is also planned in the region.
