As per Reuters report, India has identified 3 hard-rock rare earth deposits containing about 1.29 million metric tonnes of rare earth oxides in Rajasthan and Gujarat, according to Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy.
As per report, the findings were announced last month as part of the government’s plans to expand domestic access to critical minerals.
These deposits are considered significant because rare earth elements are used in several high-technology and industrial applications.
Japan and India are currently discussing possible cooperation to explore some of the deposits located in Rajasthan, according to the reports. The discussions follow a preliminary agreement on critical minerals signed by the 2 countries in 2024.
Under the proposal being considered, Japan may participate in the exploration and development of the deposits while securing supply access for its industries.
As per report, Japan could offer extraction technology and financial support for the project. Hard-rock rare earth deposits require specialised mining and processing techniques, some of which are not widely available in India.
In return, Japanese companies could receive a stable offtake of rare earth materials produced from the site. The timeline for sending Japanese experts to examine the deposits has not been disclosed.
Rare earth elements are used to manufacture permanent magnets, which are required in electric vehicle motors, wind turbines, drones and fighter aircraft. These materials are therefore important for both industrial production and defence systems.
China currently dominates the global supply chain for rare earths. Recently, Beijing restricted exports of certain dual-use materials to 20 Japanese entities, saying they were linked to Japan’s military sector.
The restrictions affect 7 rare earth elements and related materials listed under China’s export control system.
Apart from rare earths, Japan is also exploring cooperation with Indian companies to search for lithium, copper and cobalt, particularly in Africa.
Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has said the country is examining mining projects globally as it seeks to diversify sources of critical minerals.

The discussions over Rajasthan’s deposits come as both India and Japan look to secure stable supplies of critical minerals and reduce dependence on existing global supply chains.
